Kevin Walsh
A word from the chair of the Bolton Liberal Democrats
The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

This translates directly into the work we are doing within Bolton, campaigning for a more open, honest and accountable local council. Most recently we have been the only political party with councillors in the Town Hall campaigning against proposed fracking in Horwich, Westhoughton and surrounding areas. We are the only party pushing proposals to cut the number of councillors from three per ward to two per ward - saving more than £300,000 a year and making the council more accountable than ever. We are fighting for more public consultation on controversial plans - such as the recent decision to pour £3million into the short-sighted Newport Street revamp - and are pushing to allow more public scrutiny within all meetings.

If, like Bolton Liberal Democrats, you believe that you need to have a council that LISTENS to what you have to say; UNDERSTANDS the need for long-term investment to solve the problems within the town rather than short-term 'people pleasing'; and CHAMPIONS ALL communities within the town, bringing us closer together rather then encouraging divisions; then join us.

It's time we all worked together to #TakeBackOurTown

Way back in 1779 Bolton's very own Samuel Crompton produced the Hall i' th' Woodwheel - later known as the Spinning Mule. A machine that transformed the textiles industry forever. Here in Bolton we still have people with the same drive, determination and fresh thinking to produce technology that can lead the way as we enter the worldwide 'Smart Revolution'. That's why the Bolton Liberal Democrats want to see our Council work with the University of Bolton and Innovate UK to support the next generation of 'Samuel Cromptons' by investing £0.5 million as a launchpad to stimulate development of a new industry in areas such as High Technology Materials and Fibres, and High Value Manufacturing.

£169,277 is being paid out to @BoltonLabour councillors in SRAs during 2015/16. They have NO excuses for not paying their council tax! ;)

Did you know that in a council with 60 members, the Council leadership considers 30 Special Responsibility Allowances are justified? This costs YOU the, tax payer, nearly £205,000 a year! The Bolton Liberal Democrats believe that most of these (paid in addition to the Basic Allowance) could be scrapped, and we propose a cut of £60,000 from 1st June 2016.

Whenever our activists speak to people in their local areas about the priority areas they would like to see Council invest more in - the overwhelming response is "roads and pavements". That is why Bolton Liberal Democrats propose putting the brakes on Labour 'prestige projects' such as the planned improvements to Bolton One, and instead investing more in fixing roads across the town. And it's not just the roads! Too many areas of the town are affected by inadequate paving, making a simple trip to the shop a difficult trip for many of our elderly and disabled residents. This is why Bolton Liberal Democrats propose investing an extra £3.5million on top of Labour's planned £2.5 million on road and footpath projects. Making the town a safer place for traffic and pedestrians alike.

By reducing councillors from three per ward to two and holding an election every two years could save around £300,000 a year! That's £300,000 a year that could be used to pay for keeping area forums running; invested in mental health support schemes; used to help subsidise new local industry; combat fly tipping and dog fouling; or many other projects and initiatives to improve YOUR town instead of wasted on excess councillors.

The Bolton Liberal Democrats are asking for ammendments be made to the proposed Bolton Council budget being put forward by Bolton Labour. We think with a few tweaks we can easily fund a more robust road maintenance project; help and support for the homeless with a dedicated resettlement and employability project; start working towards bringing high-value industry back home to Bolton through a start-up competition; whilst cutting councillors to create a more efficient and accountable council - and saving £300,000 a year.
