Donal O’Hanlon is the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for the Bolton South East constituency.

Donal has been married for 11 years, and is a Councillor in neighbouring Bury, with a particular interest in the way housing, highways and public services are delivered. His day job is the Head of Risk Management for a high street retail group.

“Many politicians spend their lives supporting those who won’t stand up for themselves, I like to fight for the people who don’t have time to do so. As a football referee, I believe in fairness, and this is key to my manifesto: Fair taxes; a fair start for every child; fair, clean and local politics and a fair, green economy with jobs that last.”

“Before the debacle of MP’s expenses in 2008 I’d not considered standing for Parliament, but I realised that I have the tenacity, honesty and sense of duty that was missing from so many. Trust me and I’ll deliver for you, and without the hidden costs!”

Donal was born in Fairfield hospital in Bury, and has lived in Prestwich all his life. “I believe in local services like those that brought me into the world, and whilst centralizing expertise can improve doctor’s knowledge, it doesn’t improve the service to the vast majority who have to travel further to get the same level of service that was previously provided locally.”

Donal is a keen sportsman, with football and running amongst his hobbies. “I’m trying to learn golf and fly fishing now, but I rarely get the time. I’d rather be dealing with casework, because the sense of achievement when you help someone is more satisfying!”

People often ask how he manages to fit in home life, a full time job, being a Councillor and all those other hobbies. Donal’s response is simply, “If you want something done, give it a busy person!”
