Kevin Walsh
A word from the chair of the Bolton Liberal Democrats
The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

This translates directly into the work we are doing within Bolton, campaigning for a more open, honest and accountable local council. Most recently we have been the only political party with councillors in the Town Hall campaigning against proposed fracking in Horwich, Westhoughton and surrounding areas. We are the only party pushing proposals to cut the number of councillors from three per ward to two per ward - saving more than £300,000 a year and making the council more accountable than ever. We are fighting for more public consultation on controversial plans - such as the recent decision to pour £3million into the short-sighted Newport Street revamp - and are pushing to allow more public scrutiny within all meetings.

If, like Bolton Liberal Democrats, you believe that you need to have a council that LISTENS to what you have to say; UNDERSTANDS the need for long-term investment to solve the problems within the town rather than short-term 'people pleasing'; and CHAMPIONS ALL communities within the town, bringing us closer together rather then encouraging divisions; then join us.

It's time we all worked together to #TakeBackOurTown

Bolton Council declined to let ITV speak to Cllr Cliff Morris, so they went to his house where he made even more of a hash of his interview than he did on the radio.

BOLTON Council could increase council tax by 6 over the next two years to pay for social care.

Putting the onus on Local Councils to raise the extra income for social care through increased council taxation is not the answer. The government needs to step up to the plate and fund a properly integrated national health and social care service - not create a postcode lottery of care.

This week in the National publication "Private Eye" run by 'Have I Got News for You' panelist Ian Hislop....

Ministers are reportedly considering rises in council tax to fund social care amid warnings that the system could "topple".

Bolton residents may find the Labour Council increase council tax by over 4% if government proposals to raise extra cash for Adult Social Care go ahead. Under current guidance, Councils must hold a referendum if they plan on raising Council Tax by more than 3.99%. Bolton Liberal Democrats are committed to preventing tax rises wherever possible by cutting bureaucracy - including cutting 1/3 of councillors and cutting unnecessary Special Responsibility Allowances. We also feel reserve cash needs to be spent carefully on revenue generating projects and efficiency savings - rather than supporting day to day spending. We certainly wouldn't be chucking £300k at legal firms with a £300k tax bill.

“Bolton is Booming” Councillor Morris 30.11.2016” I am so upset about the state of Bolton town centre I decided to capture a few images. In a meeting on the 30th of November the leader of the council Cliff Morris said “Bolton is booming! The car parks have been full for the last few Saturdays” A wise man deals in facts not fiction. Having just had lunch in a virtually empty café I decided to take a quick look around a section of the town. There are a huge number of empty shops! The photographs were taken today, Saturday and with only two weeks to Christmas Eve and you could be excused for thinking they were captured at 8.00am on a Sunday morning! Now you would be right in saying that the retail sector is having problems due to the rise of internet shopping, however Bury and Manchester are booming due to the good management and planning of the relevant councils. The Labour led Bolton Council can basically do as they please, with their majority what it says goes. You can only point the finger at the people who run the show which for several years has been a Labour council with its leader of ten years Cliff Morris. I believe that anyone using the term “Bolton is booming” are delusional and need take a reality check. Just look in the mirror Mr Morris and be honest with yourself. How does the phrase go “would the last person to leave please turn off the lights”

Just a few of the questions that need answering. Many of these are taken from Councillor Roger Hayes who asked them at Scrutiny AND full council - yet we are still none the wiser as the answers avoided the question.
