Kevin Walsh
A word from the chair of the Bolton Liberal Democrats
The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

This translates directly into the work we are doing within Bolton, campaigning for a more open, honest and accountable local council. Most recently we have been the only political party with councillors in the Town Hall campaigning against proposed fracking in Horwich, Westhoughton and surrounding areas. We are the only party pushing proposals to cut the number of councillors from three per ward to two per ward - saving more than £300,000 a year and making the council more accountable than ever. We are fighting for more public consultation on controversial plans - such as the recent decision to pour £3million into the short-sighted Newport Street revamp - and are pushing to allow more public scrutiny within all meetings.

If, like Bolton Liberal Democrats, you believe that you need to have a council that LISTENS to what you have to say; UNDERSTANDS the need for long-term investment to solve the problems within the town rather than short-term 'people pleasing'; and CHAMPIONS ALL communities within the town, bringing us closer together rather then encouraging divisions; then join us.

It's time we all worked together to #TakeBackOurTown

This DOES NOT represent Bolton. A town that is open, tolerant and diverse. The town may be being let down by the party leading it who's failure to step up to the plate and answer questions and be more open and transparent is frustrating the residents - but the likes of the EDL and BNP using genuine concerns of the pepple of this town for their own ends is abhorrent. Many of the things being shouted by these people were hateful and the language used was vile - on a Saturday afternoon with families out Christmas shopping. It cost the tax payer thousands to ensure this needless protest could go ahead. Wasted so some grown men and women could hurl abuse at each other. Let's have less from the divisive voices and hear all those looking for a more open, tolerant and United Bolton.

.@jeremycorbyn hailed brutal dictator Castro as "a champion of social justice". If Corbyn Britain will be like a Castro Cuba count us out!

A CHAMPION hockey club may have to leave Horwich if it can't save its pitch.

Another Ill thought out @boltonLabour plan to replace artificial pitches across the town with new 3g ones has led to Horwich Hockey Club possibly being made homeless. We should have more sports facilities across the town. But we need to be inclusive and consider how decisions will affect all users.

Last night our Bolton Lib Dem twitter account asked Bolton Labour some further questions regarding the Asons grant. These were all questions the public were asking. This was their response... In true Labour fashion instead of answering questions or engaging in debate, they close the door. Bolton Labour really do have a thing against transparency. #YouCantTrustLabour

Bolton Liberal Democrats Chairman's Statement following Asons press release: "The recent statement by Asons suggesting that those questioning the grant provided by the council have a racist agenda is completely abhorrent. Such rhetoric should be condemned in the same way the racist, divisive rhetoric of the far-right is. "The people of Bolton are looking for an open, honest and accountable Council and we should not allow anyone to attempt to bury that aim underneath alternative agendas. Be they attempts to spread divisive, far-right rhetoric or attempts to silence open and honest discussion. "The Bolton Liberal Democrats will continue to push for answers regarding the grant awarded to Asons." Kevin Walsh, Chair, Bolton Liberal Democrats

A bill allowing UK intelligence agencies and police unprecedented levels of power regarding the surveillance of UK citizens has recently passed and is awaiting royal assent, making it law. This means it's not too late! This is an absolute disgrace to both privacy and freedom and needs to stop!

Tim Farron, talking sense as usual!

At tonight's Horwich Council meeting I asked the councillors.... 'In light of the recent disclosure by the Bolton News on the Secret payment of £300k to Asons Solictors if they thought this was an appropriate use of tax payers money' I was informed by the chair that the councillors would not be able to comment as it was not an agenda item. Cllr Ken Denton proposed that the Councillors should place this on the agenda for the next council meeting to discuss the details of this payment. This was seconded by Cllr Glen Atkinson. Lib Dem Cllr Glenn Atkinson seconded a request to add a vote on whether Horwich Town Cllrs support the grant given to Asons at the next meeting
