A word from the chair of the Bolton Liberal Democrats
The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

This translates directly into the work we are doing within Bolton, campaigning for a more open, honest and accountable local council. Most recently we have been the only political party with councillors in the Town Hall campaigning against proposed fracking in Horwich, Westhoughton and surrounding areas. We are the only party pushing proposals to cut the number of councillors from three per ward to two per ward - saving more than £300,000 a year and making the council more accountable than ever. We are fighting for more public consultation on controversial plans - such as the recent decision to pour £3million into the short-sighted Newport Street revamp - and are pushing to allow more public scrutiny within all meetings.

If, like Bolton Liberal Democrats, you believe that you need to have a council that LISTENS to what you have to say; UNDERSTANDS the need for long-term investment to solve the problems within the town rather than short-term 'people pleasing'; and CHAMPIONS ALL communities within the town, bringing us closer together rather then encouraging divisions; then join us.

It's time we all worked together to #TakeBackOurTown

Cannabis legislation in the UK would raise £1bn a year in taxes. The Liberal Democrats today published a report from an independent panel outlining the framework for a regulated cannabis market; find out more about the campaign here:

The Liberal Democrats are backing a new report calling for the legalised sale of marijuana through licensed outlets, including "cannabis social clubs".

The Liberal Democrats are backing a new report calling for the legalised sale of marijuana through licensed outlets. "Every year, billions of pounds are put into the pockets of organised criminals selling cannabis, and vast amounts of police time and resources are wasted, going after those using the drug," said its health spokesman Norman Lamb. "It is not good enough to continue pretending that everything is OK, or that the current system is working. Millions of British citizens are using cannabis with no idea of the potency of what they are taking. "The current system is doing untold harm: on health grounds and on justice grounds. Leaving the cannabis market in the hands of criminals puts people's health at risk, and criminalises people, blighting their careers."

An LGA report report released today shows that councils fear that the Conservative housing bill will see a sell off of homes that will not be replaced and a rocketing of homelessness in communities across Britain. The survey of local authorities, treated as a snapshot by the LGA laid out their conce…

"This report just emphasises the importance of tackling the issue of homelessness head on and the Bolton Liberal Democrats will continue to fight to ensure the Council play their part in making sure no-one in Bolton goes to sleep at night without a roof over their heads." Cllr Roger Hayes, Smithills

A DEPARTMENT store that has been trading in Bolton town centre for almost 200 years could be forced to shut up shop.

Last week BHS announced that they could be closing the Bolton Store and today reports have been appearing that after 200 years Beales could be forced to shut up shop. It's time to stop putting on a brave face Bolton Labour and accept that the Town Centre plan isn't working and that £3million to bolt some grey boxes to the front of every shop on Newport Street isn't enough to reverse the town's fortunes. We need REAL industry investment. We need higher wage growth and we need to be taking REAL action against absentee town centre landlords using all legislation at our disposal to get empty units that have laid dormant for almost a decade in some places back into business.

Best of luck to @RWAM19 who's left us to take up a well deserved fundraising role down @LibDems HQ in London. Look after him you guys!
