Kevin Walsh
A word from the chair of the Bolton Liberal Democrats
The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.

This translates directly into the work we are doing within Bolton, campaigning for a more open, honest and accountable local council. Most recently we have been the only political party with councillors in the Town Hall campaigning against proposed fracking in Horwich, Westhoughton and surrounding areas. We are the only party pushing proposals to cut the number of councillors from three per ward to two per ward - saving more than £300,000 a year and making the council more accountable than ever. We are fighting for more public consultation on controversial plans - such as the recent decision to pour £3million into the short-sighted Newport Street revamp - and are pushing to allow more public scrutiny within all meetings.

If, like Bolton Liberal Democrats, you believe that you need to have a council that LISTENS to what you have to say; UNDERSTANDS the need for long-term investment to solve the problems within the town rather than short-term 'people pleasing'; and CHAMPIONS ALL communities within the town, bringing us closer together rather then encouraging divisions; then join us.

It's time we all worked together to #TakeBackOurTown

This is why it's time for all Bolton parties to come together and support withdrawal from GMSF. https://t.co/uC218xQqGC

The Liberal Democrats are calling for Council Leader Cliff Morris to withdraw Bolton from the GMSF and focus on bringing brownfield sites and empty homes into use.

We, the people of Bolton wish to make it known we fully support the Bolton Liberal Democrat motion which states: Council accepts the need for a supply of new housing in Bolton, but believes that attempts to identify a 20 year land supply for housing risks too many uncertainties and believes it...

Pledge your support. On Wednesday 22nd February Bolton Council will debate the Liberal Democrat motion calling for the Council leader to withdraw Bolton from the Greater Manchester Spacial Framework and instead use all available powers to bring Brownfield sites and empty homes into use. Bringing empty homes back into use and building on identified brownfield sites could bring up to 10,000 homes onto the market and prevent any need for greenbelt building in the immediate future. Whilst Labour continue cutting services for the most vulnerable, over 2/3 of Labour Cllrs still claim an SRA

LABOUR councillors have been accused of treating the council’s scrutiny process “with contempt”, after five of them left a meeting early.

Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Roger Hayes said "it was ludicrous and hardly fair on the officers"

BREAKING NEWS: A meeting yesterday evening to scrutinise issues such as the Slim Bins and fly-tipping currently of concern to residents across the town, ended in confusion after cabinet members left the meeting early on - leaving no decision makers to answer questions! Scrutiny meetings are meetings designed to allow opposition councillors to question decisions made by cabinet members and officers. Cllr Nick Peel - who is lead on Enviromental Services - was unavailable due to being in London on council business but both Cllr Chadwick and Cllr Watters left the meeting early on leaving no cabinet members to question regarding decision making and opposition councillors outnumbering Labour cllrs by 6 to 4. As a result opposition councillors passed an amendment expressing concern at the contempt shown. Yet more evidence of Bolton Labour looking to avoid answering questions.

A Wigan councillor has vowed to maintain his opposition to the controversial GM Spatial Framework despite it costing him his cabinet place.

So Wigan Labour seem so committed to digging up the greenbelt that they're sacking any of their own Cabinet members that choose to dissent. Will Bolton Labour be doing the same?
